This game is the early game, but it really shouldn’t be treated as the undercard on Saturday. Louisville and Kentucky are part of the nastiest rivalry in college basketball, the one with the most bitter antagonisms not just between opposing fan bases, but the opposing coaches. Rick Pitino of Louisville and John Calipari of Kentucky truly loathe each other. The two Italian-American coaches have been at each other’s throats for a long time. They both enjoyed their initial coaching successes in New England – Pitino at Boston University and Providence College, Calipari at the University of Massachusetts. They met in the 1996 Final Four when Pitino’s Kentucky team held off Calipari’s UMass group in East Rutherford, New jersey, paving the way for Pitino’s sole national title. They both went to the NBA for a brief period of time and got humiliated – Pitino with the Boston Celtics and Calipari with the New Jersey Nets. They rebounded by relocating the Ohio and Tennessee River Valleys – Pitino at Louisville, Calipari with Memphis and then Kentucky, where he landed in 2009 when that job opened up. These two men have followed each other across the landscape of college basketball. Their hatred for each other is almost as expansive as the acrimony shared by Louisville and Kentucky fans.

These two schools did not meet at all four 24 years. They had not played a game from 1959 to 1983, and they reunited in 1983′s postseason, not the regular season. The teams split two NCAA Tournament games in 1983 and 1984, with Louisville winning the first contest and Kentucky the second. The schools went to the Final Four in those years, reaffirming their own credentials while building a rivalry that resumed its regular-season series over the past two decades. Pitino coached at Kentucky when the UL-UK regular season rivalry returned to the court, and the fact that Pitino then became Louisville’s coach in 2001 made him a traitor to Kentucky fans. This made an already-heated rivalry that much more vicious. Calipari’s entrance into the rivalry, with Pitino on the other bench, only sent Cardinals-Wildcats to yet another level of fear and loathing. This is something that has to be taken into account when viewing this contest.
Kentucky, on the merits, is a better team. The Wildcats have NBA-level players such as Anthony Davis, the best player in college basketball this season. Kentucky can play above the rim, while Louisville has to bother the Wildcats and force them into taking low-percentage perimeter jumpers. Louisville and Pitino will likely throw a zone defense at Kentucky and put pressure on the Wildcats to hit long-distance shots. The bitterness of this rivalry factors into the outcome in this reason: Kentucky might feel the pressure to beat Louisville more than it will enjoy the prospect of playing for a spot in the national championship game on Monday night. If Kentucky allows pressure to be a weight, and not a privilege, Louisville can steal this game. If the Wildcats exhibit supreme confidence and hit an appreciable percentage of three-point shots, they will be impossible to beat. We’ll see which narrative unfolds on Saturday evening in New Orleans.
