Six Nations Wales v France: Dan Lydiate holds us together says Warren Gatland

Dan Lydiate has been hailed as "an unsung hero" of Wales' Six Nations campaign and likened to 2003 England World Cup winner Richard Hill.

Newport Gwent Dragons flanker Lydiate will be key to Welsh victory hopes in Saturday's Six Nations title and Grand Slam decider against France at the Millennium Stadium. His prodigious tackle count, physical presence and often unheralded work in many other areas makes him a player Wales coach Warren Gatland cannot do without.

"Dan is a definitely an unsung hero," Gatland said. "There is not a lot flashy about him. He does a lot of the donkey work to make the others look good and you need those type of people. They are the glue that holds everything together. He is probably a little bit in the same mould that Richard Hill was with England when England were going so well."

He added: "People used to say how important he was to the team. Dan is a great athlete, a great professional, and he is important for us."

Rugby Six Nations 2012: Wales v France - as it happened

And the back-row battle between Lydiate, Sam Warburton and Toby Faletau opposite Les Bleus' breakaway trio of Thierry Dusautoir, Julien Bonnaire and Imanol Harinordoquy could prove the game's significant contest.

Skipper Warburton echoed Gatland's sentiments, adding: "I think if you asked anybody in the squad who they thought the three most important players were, I think Dan would come up in a lot of the answers.

"He is thought of very highly among the players. He is one of our form players, definitely an unsung hero and a key man in this campaign. His work in defence is second to none."

Gatland, meanwhile, believes France will aim to get physical with Wales. France coach Philippe Saint-Andre saw his team's Six Nations title and Grand Slam hopes evaporate with a home defeat against England last weekend.

And the former Gloucester and Sale Sharks boss has responded by making five changes, plus a positional switch to the wing for prolific try-scoring centre Wesley Fofana, but they are eminently capable of spoiling the planned Welsh party, given that their Six Nations record in Cardiff shows five wins and one defeat.

"I think they are going to come and be very physical with us," Gatland added. "They've picked a tough pack, so we are going to have to expect that real physical contribution they are capable of bringing. It is going to be tough up front."

Six Nations Wales v France: Alun-Wyn Jones will 'never forget' pain of World Cup defeat

England, Wales and France will all be aiming to secure their spot in the top four of the International Rugby Board's rankings in what promises to be a memorable weekend of rugby.

England currently complete the top four with the southern hemisphere triumvirate of New Zealand, Australia and South Africa after beating France 24-22 last weekend. However, even victory over Ireland at Twickenham on Saturday may not be enough to retain that position.

The only way England will stay fourth is if Wales beat France at the Millennium Stadium with a winning margin of 15 points or less, a scenario which could see the two rivals separated by just seven hundredths of a rating point.

A more convincing Welsh victory at the Millennium Stadium would not only clinch the Grand Slam but lift them above England, regardless of the margin of victory at Twickenham, to equal their highest ever ranking.

If Wales do climb to fourth, a position they occupied before France ended their 2011 World Cup dreams, then they could do so by as little as five hundredths from England, setting the scene for an interesting month of tour matches involving all the Tier 1 nations in June.

France will return to fourth with any victory and could actually climb three places this weekend if they beat Wales by more than 15 points, assuming the place they began the Six Nations in before the draw with Ireland and loss to England saw them fall to sixth. Les Bleus cannot slip from sixth place even with a heavy loss, as England would fall below them into seventh if they suffer a second loss at Twickenham in the 2012 Championship with Ireland climbing to fifth.

It is not all good news for Ireland, though, as a loss would see them swap places again with Argentina to lie eighth, equalling their lowest ranking. There is no danger of slipping further as even an emphatic loss would still leave them more than three rating points above Tonga in ninth.

Wales, like England, could also end the weekend ranked seventh depending on the margin of defeats for them and their neighbours, a scenario which would rub further salt into their disappointment at missing out on the Grand Slam.
