2. Catholic: The Irish should be formidable with return of all but one player (Michael Bonfini) from a 2011 team that got hot in the postseason by winning the District 4-AAA tournament and advancing to state sectionals before losing at state runner-up Johnson City Science Hill. Mark Leader returns as the Irish coach.

3. Farragut: The Admirals lost three key players from the 2011 team (Paul Neuefeind, Carlos Garcia, Logan Heidinger) that lost to Hardin Valley Academy in the Region 2-AAA semifinals. But that doesn’t mean the Admirals won’t be state contenders once some players settle into new positions and the postseason rolls around.

West: Rebels have a wealth of experienced players with a class of nine seniors who started last season, which ended with a loss to a hot Catholic team in the District 4-AAA tournament. West had a couple of key losses, though, including high-scoring forward Jack McCoy (Clemson).

6. Hardin Valley Academy: All but four starters are gone from 2011 Class AAA state championship team. Would-be seniors Dalton Guzman and Devon Cox opted to graduate in December; Guzman is playing at East Tennessee State. Also gone is 2011 PrepXtra Player of the Year Nick Skoda (Appalachian State).

7. Oak Ridge: Only two seniors were on the 2011 team that went 9-8-1 and finished second in District 3-AAA behind Hardin Valley. All the returnees and a huge freshman class (18) leave the Wildcats optimistic for this season and on down the road.

8. Greeneville: Seven returning starters give the Greene Devils hope for advancing to Class A/AA tournament for the second consecutive season. They lost in Class A/AA quarterfinals to Kingsbury 2-1.

Jonathan Mirts and Jay Emmert, CAK, seniors: Both were key players for Class A/AA state semifinal team and are back to anchor the defense this season.

Tim Baker, Catholic, senior: Chosen District 4-AAA Midfielder of the Year last season while helping the Irish on postseason run to state sectionals.

Suddy Hutchins, Catholic, senior: Strong, fast player will combine with Tim Baker for a top duo in the midfield.

Luke Wegryn, Catholic, senior: Started in goal for the 2011 season and has played for the Irish since his freshman year.

Mark Mishu, Catholic, senior: Talented, strong defender; plays similar style to older brother Luke Mishu, who plays for Notre Dame.

Scott Dresen, Farragut, senior: Midfielder is a well-rounded player who goes full speed all the time.

Tyler Rhone, Farragut, senior: Sweeper is a three-year starter and varsity player since his freshman season.

Dillon Landguth, Farragut senior: Played left midfielder last year but could spend this season as a forward, a position he plays in club soccer. Captain this season.

Chris Kzsos, Farragut, senior: Right midfielder was one of the Admirals’ top scorers last season.

Zack Snow, Farragut, senior: Plays on the defensive end, but can still be a weapon from there.

Conner McCarty, Bearden, senior: Forward was one of the Bulldogs’ top scorers last season and should play that role again this season as a co-captain.

Andrew Fulcher, Bearden, senior: Tenacious midfielder plays with great intensity and has no weaknesses. Co-captain this season.

James Ferguson, Bearden, senior: Defender started last season and had a great junior year; will need to carry the load on defense this season.

Keaton Kaye, West, junior: Forward had nine goals last season, but could put up more this season with departure of Jack McCoy.

Josh Plenzler, West, senior: Strong forward should be a key player in Rebels’ offensive plans. He had five goals in 2011.

Noah Williams, West, senior: Played defense in club soccer, but will be used as an attacking midfielder. He had nine assists in 2011.

Trent Stethen, Hardin Valley Academy, senior: All-District 3-AAA defender was a starter on 2012 Class AAA state championship team.

Brandon Roy, Hardin Valley Academy, senior: All-District 3-AAA and All-Region 2-AAA midfielder was a key player for state championship team; creates and distributes ball well.

Jonathan Perelman, Hardin Valley Academy, senior: Played defense on state championship team, but may move to attacking center-midfielder this season. Plans to play for Lee College in Cleveland, Tenn.

Drew Fezell, Greeneville, junior: All-state midfielder is a strong, possession-type player.

Hays Culbreth, Greeneville, sophomore: Forward has great speed and was a top scorer for Greene Devils last season.

Sean Howell, Greeneville, senior: Attacking midfielder will be a key for the Greene Devils’ offense if they’re going to have success.

Caleb Lucas, Maryville, senior: All-state forward led the team in overall points with 17 goals and 14 assists last season. He plans to play soccer at Berry (Ga.) College.

Noah Erwin, Maryville, senior: Was a backup last season, but should play a much bigger role in the midfield this season.
