Derry Mathews given little chance against Anthony Crolla
LIVERPOOL'S Derry Mathews may be a nine-year veteran of the fight game, with multiple honours to back-up his credentials, but the 28-year-old has been afforded little respect by odds compilers who make him a clear betting underdog to wrestle the British title from Anthony Crolla this weekend.
The fighter formerly known as “Dirty” Derry due to his ruthless approach during a 20-fight, five-year unbeaten run, has suffered a loss of form in recent times and since being stopped in five rounds by big punching Mongolian Choi in 2008 for his first taste of defeat, Mathews has managed only nine wins from his last 16 starts. A draw and defeat in his last two does little to inspire confidence in the Scouser and he can be found as big as 4/1 with Paddy Power in the betting ring.
Each of Mathews’ last three victories have come via stoppage, so supporters may be attracted to the 10/1 (Boylesports) about another early night, although savvy punters won’t be lured in by the promise of double high returns.
“Million Dollar” Anthony Crolla is in the form of his career, enjoying a 10-fight winning run that has seen him collect and defend the British crown. Those close to the Manchester man believe we are only beginning to see his true potential, however.
A one-sided points verdict over Scotland’s Willie Limond last time out moved the 25-year-old’s record to 23 wins against just two defeats, forcing bookmakers to cover up and offer no more than Betfred’s skinny 2/9. With only nine KO victories on his CV the champion will be looking to use his skills to build up a lead on the judges’ scorecards, and Betfred offer 9/4 for a points win, while Boylesports think the KO is most likely at 4/5.
Reasons to cheer have been few and far between for Mathews of late, but emotions will be running high in this Liverpool vs Manchester title match-up and the outsider certainly has the skills to upset the apple cart. The stuffing was well and truly knocked out of him by Choi back in 2008 however, and each of his losses so far have come by crushing knockout. Six stoppage defeats in four years has destroyed Mathews’ confidence and I see no way of him claiming Crolla’s prized asset. The champion will be eager to prove his punch power and claim a major scalp, but I expect him to do it over the distance.
This bout going beyond 9.5 rounds is attractively priced at 4/5 by Boylesports and that looks to be the safest option, while those hoping for a bit more for their money should have Crolla on points.
ANTHONY CROLLA has targeted winning a Lonsdale belt outright before becoming world lightweight champion. The popular Mancunian makes the second defence of his British crown against Derry Mathews (29-6-1) at Oldham Sports Centre on Saturday night (April 21).
If Crolla (23-2) beats his Liverpool rival he’ll be just one notch away from claiming a Lonsdale belt for keeps.
Hatton Promotions star Crolla, 25, said: “The Lonsdale belt is my absolute pride and joy. It means the world to me and my family are so proud of it.
“To have one for keeps on the mantel piece means the world to me. I always said when I came into boxing it was my ambition to win a Lonsdale belt.
“I boxed on an amateur show when I was a kid and saw one. Ever since those it has been a target.”
Crolla knows the world title scene is wide open. The WBA belt is vacant and Scot Ricky Burns is among the other champions.
Anthony added: “I am not distracted by talk of world title fights because the fight I am preparing for is the most important.
“If the next one goes wrong against Mathews talk of European and world title fights down the line go out of the window.”
Other Contests: Jon Lewis Dickinson v Matty Askin (10×3 cruiserweight), Stephen Foster Jr v Jose Antonio Elizabeth (6×3 super-featherweight), Jazza Dickins v Yuri Voronin (6×3 super-bantamweight), Lucas Brown v Paul Butlin (6 rounds heavyweight), Adam Little v Chris Jenkinson (6×3 welterweight), Tommy Stubbs v Gavin Reid (4×3 bantamweight), Ryan Doyle v Selected Opponent (4×3 featherweight).
